It was a rough week for the senior cat, Sammy. He was about to turn 19 years old. And he was about to become homeless. His long-time owner was forced to make the decision to enter an assisted living home. But it was a senior home that did not allow the loving cat to come with him.
An animal shelter in Ohio threw a birthday party for a 19-year-old cat who was surrendered into their care — and he got adopted the next day.
Upon his surrender, his .d.evastated owner had provided all of his records. These indicated that Sammy was actually about to have a birthday on June 15th; just around the corner at the time! Which meant that there was only one thing to do.
Cincinnati Animal CARE spoiled the birthday boy Sammy with a glittery cowboy hat that matched his collar and a cake on June 15, sharing photos of the bash on Facebook.
‘Recently, the staff at Kitty City learned that today is senior Sammy’s 19th birthday! Naturally, we threw him a birthday party!’ the shelter captioned the heartwarming snapshots.
But there was one extra, unconventional requirement that his new family would need to agree to.
The only rule for adopting Sammy though? You have to throw him a 20th birthday party on 6/15/22! ?
‘Happy birthday to this beautiful fella who would love a nice, quiet home to live out his golden years!’ the shelter wrote.
Cincinnati Animal CARE added in the comments that there was also singing on Sammy’s birthday, which many appreciated.
More than 250 people commented on the post, with many wishing Sammy a happy birthday and praising the shelter for the work they do.
The very next morning, Sammy’s 19th year on this earth began with a fresh start. Little did he know that he had caught the eye of a special adopter already. And even before the rescue held the party, his fate held wonderful things.
His adopter, who actually messaged us about Sammy before he became internet famous, was waiting outside before we even opened today! He is going home with a fellow senior kitty and has already been spoiled with a new hat!
‘Sammy is just amazingly sweet,’ he added. ‘[He] likes to cuddle, likes to be held, likes to rest his head on you, and was definitely soaking up all the attention [on his birthday].
‘He’s a very agreeable cat, as I’m sure you can tell with the spectacular hat he got to wear… He’s very observant and likes to just sit and watch what’s going on.’
